BBC News Feature - Why Children in North Yorkshire Are Missing Out on School Vision Screening

In January, our owner and optometrist at Yorkshire Eyewear, Garrey Haase, was featured on BBC News highlighting an important issue affecting families across North Yorkshire - the fact that some local authorities, including North Yorkshire, no longer offer vision screening in schools.

The UK National Screening Committee recommends that children aged four to five receive vision screening in primary school. However, recent research shows that around 11 percent of local authorities no longer provide this service.

A Common Misunderstanding

During the interview, our optometrist explained that many parents still believe schools carry out full eye examinations.

In reality, schools have never provided full eye tests - only basic vision screening - and in North Yorkshire, even that screening has now stopped.

This creates a risk that children with undetected vision problems may not be identified until much later.

As discussed in the segment, without screening or a visit to an optician, some children could reach nine or ten years old before realising they cannot see clearly.

A Real-Life Example

The BBC report featured eight-year-old Eric, who has worn glasses since the age of four. His eyesight issues were picked up early because his parents chose to have his eyes tested after noticing small signs that something was not quite right.

Every child under 16, and under 19 in full-time education, is entitled to a free NHS eye examination. But this only helps if parents actively book an appointment.

Why Early Eye Tests Matter

Vision screening is designed to help detect conditions such as lazy eye and to protect a child’s visual development. Without it, children may struggle with reading, concentration and confidence without understanding why.

The message from the feature was clear - parents should not rely on schools to check their child’s eyesight.

If your child has not had a full eye examination, booking one is a simple step that can make a significant difference.

At Yorkshire Eyewear, we are committed to ensuring children across North Yorkshire have access to the comprehensive eye care they deserve.
