Harry Gration helps Yorkshire Eyewear celebrate 10th anniversary!
On the day the UK paid tribute to its small businesses, a Yorkshire enterprise marked 10 years as a local success story and 21years service given to the industry by one of its’ staff members.
The staff and customers of Yorkshire Eyewear celebrated this fantastic milestone on Saturday December 5th – the same day when Small Business Saturday honoured the 5 million small enterprises up and down the country.
The anniversary celebrations took place at the original Boothferry Road branch in Goole where in 2005 the company opened the first of its four branches. Harry Gration, MBE, from BBC’s Look North, was invited to come along and cut the cake.
Harry Gration said a few words to the customers and staff present, commenting; “I always try to support and visit small businesses like Yorkshire Eyewear. Having their services available on our high streets and in small market towns like Goole, Howden and Snaith is so important. The personalised care you receive from a family-run business is generally much better than from a large chain. I congratulate Yorkshire Eyewear - Garrey, Karen and their fantastic team of staff on their 10th Anniversary and wish them every success for the next 10 years!”
Harry also admitted that he was overdue an eye examination and would make an appointment very soon with Garrey!
Garrey Haase, owner of Yorkshire Eyewear, then went on to surprise one of his staff by inviting her to receive a gift in honour of her 21 years of service.
Jo Ellis started her career in the optical industry with Michael James opticians – the company which Garrey & Karen Haase bought in 2005 – she trained to become a dispensing optician with Michael James and remained with the company once Garrey and Karen took over at the healm. As well as her dispensing role, Jo is also responsible for the window displays in each of the Yorkshire Eyewear branches – the Goole branch won the best dressed window for Goole’s Beach Day earlier this year.
Garry said: “From the start we had a very clear vision of the independent practice we wanted to run: a friendly, welcoming environment supported by professional patient care and exceptional levels of service for great value. Jo gives that service to every one of our patients. This is a small, but well deserved token of our appreciation of her dedication!”
Yorkshire Eyewear was also praised by Paul Surridge, chief executive at Sight Care – a support network for independent opticians. He said: “It’s vital for the strength of our high streets that independent retailers like Yorkshire Eyewear flourish. Many congratulations!
“Ten years is a significant landmark. It’s good news for Yorkshire Eyewear obviously, but also for all the patients and customers who have received the kind of individual, local service that independent opticians are so excellent at delivering.”
Yorkshire Eyewear’s success has also recently been recognised with nominations in the Association of Optometrists Awards 2015 for Marketing Campaign of the Year and Young Practice of the Year for the Howden branch.
